She pointed to the decorative gates on Larkin Street gifted by crypto billionaire Chris Larsen. She talked about Live on Larkin, the monthly street parties drawing people to the neighborhood, and about the art walks funded by Larsen’s $5 million donation.She touted the improvements as a glimpse of what sustained investment could do for a neighborhood long associated with some of the city’s most visible problems.The tour marked a first for the Downtown Development Corporation, a nonprofit that funnels private money into public projects. Since launching last year, the DDC has pledged $60 million to revitalize the city’s core. But almost all of that money is flowing to Union Square, the Embarcadero, the East Cut, and Yerba Buena. ADVERTISEMENTThat has left leaders in the Tenderloin and Mid-Market asking where their neighborhoods fit into San Francisco’s downtown comeback. They argue that areas long associated with the city’s decline are essential to its recovery but have largely been left out of the wave of private investment reshaping the rest of downtown. Larsen’s $5 million gift has helped but is, advocates say, a fraction of what the area needs.Union Square has been a symbol of downtown’s recovery and a target for projects focused on bringing visitors back to San Francisco.For Robinson and others in the Tenderloin and Mid-Market, the exclusion stings. “The sky is the limit for the need,” she said.
